A chemical skin peel is a simple, but slightly painful procedure that can help women appear more beautiful, Eyewitness News 5's Kimberly Lohman reported Tuesday as part of the "Beautiful Solutions" series.

The peels, while not offering permanent improvement, can help smooth wrinkles and help improve discoloration of skin, Dr. Jeanette Padgett told Lohman as she demonstrated the procedure live during the 5 p.m. newscast.

"It helps smooth the skin and improve the overall appearance of skin, helps with fine wrinkling and helps with discoloration," Dr. Jeanette Padgett said.

Using a small sponge, Padgett applied a thin layer of a chemical, Trichlorocetic acid, to a patient's face.

A fan located nearby was directed toward the patient's face.

"It can be slightly painful," Padgett said.

Typically, the chemicals are allowed stay on a patient's face for about four minutes, and then should be removed.

"If you leave it on more than that, it could get too deep and you could have scarring," Padgett said.

In a few days, the patient's face should begin peeling "like a sunburn," she said.

The cost of the procedure can cost up to $300 per session.
