OKLAHOMA CITY -- An Oklahoma City police officer was injured Friday morning when he was struck by an alleged hit-and-run driver.
Police said Sgt. Ron Ritter was struck by a decommissioned Frederick, Okla., police vehicle near the junction of Interstate 35 and Interstate 40. He was taken by ambulance to the University of Oklahoma Medical Center with minor injuries.
Sgt. Greg Giltner said Carlos Antonio Tecumseh was arrested in connection with the incident. According to officers at the scene, Tecumseh was tracked down just a few miles away from the area where Ritter's bike lay in pieces. At the time he was hit, Ritter and another officer were using radar guns to monitor speed near the Fort Smith junction. Giltner said Tecumseh clipped Ritter, who was set up near the eastbound lane."Sgt. Ritter was hit so hard, his affairs were spread all over the interstate -- including a dry cleaning bill, a citation and even his radar gun, which was knocked off him, 45 feet away," Giltner said.As Eyewitness News 5's Kimberly Lohman reported, Ritter suffered severe road rash but was walking and talking before the ambulance took him to the hospital. He was listed in good condition late Friday.Meanwhile, police were still looking into why Tecumseh -- who has a lengthy criminal record that includes burglary and firearms charges -- was driving a Frederick police vehicle. The cars were registered to Colorado-based Government Leasing Co., which took possession of them after they were decommissioned.Eyewitness News 5 contacted the leasing company's headquarters for comment. A company spokesman refused comment.
