Parents Appalled By Pimp, Hooker Halloween Costumes

California Company Offers Racy Children's Costumes On Web Site

With Halloween around the corner, some metro-area business owners and parents said they were shocked Wednesday to see what an online costume shop is selling to children.

Eyewitness News 5 learned that a California online retailer is offering children's "pimp" and "ho" outfits for Halloween. The marketing firm Brandsonsale.com is offering the costumes along with more traditional costumes such as Spider-Man, Batman and Cinderella.

When Eyewitness News 5's Mark Opgrande asked Costume House owner Dean Johnson if he had heard about the pimp and hooker costumes, he said he was shocked to learn that someone is selling the already-controversial outfits in children's sizes.

"Oh my God," Johnson said. "Child ho costume … that's bad."

Brandsonsale.com spokesman Johnathan Weeks told the Washington Post last week that the costumes are among his biggest sellers. He said the company plans similar outfits for entire families in the future -- including infant-sized pimp and ho garments.

Would you allow your child to dress up like a pimp or hooker for Halloween?

Oklahoma City parents said they are appalled that the costumes are readily available on the Internet.

"That's just outrageous," parent Naylecia McNeel said. "That's just crazy … teaching our kids to become pimps and hos. That's not good."

McNeel said she would never let her 2-year-old child dress up like a prostitute or a pimp.

"I'd be like, 'Are you insane?'" she said. "I wouldn't expose my child to that."

Johnson said his business rents and sells thousands of costumes to both children and adults. He said that he does have pimp costumes but added that his outfits come only in adult sizes.

"It's just not our thing," Johnson said. "We kind of try to do the positive role model thing."

Brandsonsale.com claims its costumes are intended to be humorous and do not promote prostitution.
